The GCT Diversity & Inclusion Committee’s Book Club continued its discussion of diversity and its impact on society by examining Art Spiegelman’s graphic novel Maus, which was serialized between 1980 and 1991.

With Passover and Yom Ha’Shoa (Holocaust Remembrance Day) top of mind in April, the Committee explored the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel for its themes on race and ethnicity, propaganda, oppression, internment and freedom in the time of Nazi occupation in Europe. In the midst of global instability and escalating conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the themes in the graphic-novel style book reinforce the importance of remaining allies with marginalized people and working toward a more supportive and inclusive future.

In addition to the book club, the GCT Diversity & Inclusion Committee meets regularly to discuss a variety of topics, including inherent and unconscious bias, the importance of language in the workplace and tangible ways to remain committed to enriching diversity. The committee has also initiated firmwide training programs on diversity education, transgender and gender nonconforming awareness and acceptance, civility training, cultural competency training and encouraging an inclusive workplace.
